Leading UK composites manufacturer Atlas Composites has partnered with Derby College to welcome their latest crop of engineering students to its 25,000 sq ft state of the art composites manufacturing facility.
Over the course of 3 site visits, coinciding with the start of the busy F1 season, Atlas played host to a special career based programme aimed at placing engineering students into the workplace.
A select group of over 45 individuals from Derby College’s Engineering Careers Academy gained a valuable, behind the scenes, insight into composites manufacturing to see if they have what it takes to carve out a career in carbon fibre Formula One components or aerospace composites.
With commercial and military aircraft composites set to provide £0.4bn in growth over the next 5 years and the UK composites industry expected to grow by around 8% per annum to 2020, choosing a career path in aerospace composites may prove to be a worthwhile decision.

Atlas Composites MD Shaun Moloney explains “The UK occupies a world leading position in composites engineering and Atlas Composites have been at the forefront of this continued growth for over 15 years.”
“Through sponsorship of a paid internship in association with Derby College’s Engineering Careers Academy, Atlas Composites are delighted to be supporting the next generation composites engineers of the future and the economic development of the local area.”
Dubbed ‘composites valley’ due to the proximity of composites expertise, “the East Midlands area has a reputation for manufacturing excellence that can only be enhanced by developing partnerships between businesses and further education”, explains Moloney.
Derby College has selected eight students who are in their first year of the level three Extended Diploma in Manufacturing to be part of the Engineering Career Academy. The students will benefit from having an industry mentor, attending guru lectures and site visits and will also have a paid internship at a company this summer.
